Message from the Board President
Dear YLWD Community,
It seems that this summer will turn out very differently than many of us had originally planned. For some, vacations will be put on hold and for most, even canceled. Adapting to the new guidelines put forth due to the COVID-19 crisis will definitely test our patience. Even with some of these limitations, we hope that you will find some time for rest and relaxation this summer. There are always several options for distraction. Enjoy a walk with the family or even an evening of board games and make the most of these beautiful summer days and nights. Whether you are able to get out of town this summer or will be home enjoying a “stay-cation”, you can be confident that YLWD is here and at your service. For 24/7 and 365 days a year, YLWD is committed to serving you.
Our District also has some big news to share with the community. General Manager, Marc Marcantonio has decided to leave the District for retirement life and Assistant General Manager Brett R. Barbre has been promoted as the new General Manager. Marc’s dedication to providing safe and reliable water to the District’s customers each and every day was always his primary role when he came to work. His commitment and dedication to serving the water community were demonstrated at the highest level of integrity. With the promotion of Brett to General Manager, we look to his years of leadership in the water community and his commitment to serving the District. Brett’s work as Assistant General Manager at YLWD; as well as serving as a Director of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California Board and as a Director on the Municipal Water District of Orange County Board brings a wealth of experience to lead our District for years to come.
Committed to you,
Phil Hawkins
Board President
Message from the General Manager
It was 22 years ago that I was elected to the Board of Directors of the Yorba Linda Water District (YLWD) and little did I realize that it would begin a journey that would bring me back to serve as the 8th General Manager in the history of the District. On a side note, I have always liked the number 8 as my favorite baseball player wore it – Carl Yastrzemski!
In the intervening 22 years, I served on the Board Directors of the Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) and was elected/re-elected in 2000, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018. In addition, I spent over 10 years on the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD).
I moved to Yorba Linda in 1969 when the city was barely 2 years old and the population was a little over 10,000. I graduated from Glenknoll Elementary School, Bernardo Yorba Junior High School, and Esperanza High School.
I remember when fireworks were shot off over the Yorba Linda Country Club to celebrate the 4th of July. I remember when they built the Country Club Village shopping center on the corner of Fairmont and Yorba Linda Blvd – a single-cylinder scoop of chocolate mint chip ice cream was 5 cents at Thrifty!
I also remember hearing the siren and the loud horn calling the volunteer firefighters to service. From the Yorba Linda Building Materials and Yorba Linda Feed Store on Imperial Highway in what is now the Yorba Linda Station to the A&W Root Beer drive-in on the northeast corner of Imperial and Yorba Linda Blvd, I have seen lots of change.
Since 1909, the Yorba Linda Water District has been growing along with the community. Today with over $1 billion in assets to care for, we provide water and sewer service to over 25,000 customers. We have 14 reservoirs, 12 booster pump stations, 10 groundwater wells, and a network of water pipelines that moves water from an elevation of 250 ft. to 1,390 ft. We also have a separate network of sewer pipelines to safely collect and transfer wastewater from your home.
We have a great team at YLWD, and each of my predecessors as General Manager helped to build the agency and crafted what we have today – one of the finest water districts in California. I am honored to have been selected to help lead the District and look forward to the challenges ahead. If you ever need anything, please contact me at brbarbre@ylwd.com – I am here to serve you.
