Making Conservation a California Way of Life
California’s “Making Conservation a California Way of Life” legislation (AB 1668 and SB 606) was signed into law in 2018, establishing a long-term framework for water conservation and drought resilience. Following several years of rulemaking, the State Water Resources Control Board adopted the implementing regulations in 2024, with the new water use efficiency standards taking effect on January 1, 2025.
The regulation sets new water use objectives for Yorba Linda Water District’s (YLWD) entire service area, not individual customers or businesses. These objectives consider several factors, including:
- Indoor water use based on the amount of water used per person per day;
- Outdoor water use for residential and commercial irrigation; and
- Water lost through leaks in the water system.
YLWD has already made significant progress toward meeting the State’s Water Use Objective and anticipates remaining in compliance with the new requirements. The District will continue partnering with customers to support water efficiency through water-saving rebates, conservation programs, and infrastructure improvements.
California continues to experience changing weather patterns and extreme swings between wet and dry conditions. Our customers have made tremendous progress in using water more efficiently, and together we can continue building a more sustainable water future for our community and future generations.
